Childhood Obesity Linked to Genes

Thirty-seven states, in fact , reported increases in adult obesity since 2007.  And in no state was there a decrease.  The state with the highest adult obesity rate is Mississippi, at 31.7 percent.  Colorado has the lowest — 18.4 percent, according to statistics.  That Rocky Mountains state’s other relative claim to fame is that, in every other state in the union, more than twenty percent of adults are obese — though even in Colorado the obesity rate climbed slightly from the previous year’s figure.

And consider this:  In 1991, no state had an adult obesity rate higher than twenty percent.  Today, every state except Colorado does.

Now it surely must seem odd to be reading such morbid news in a country where sports and exercise clubs have proliferated across nearly every urban zip code, where physical fitness has been a national obsession for decades, and where magazine articles have talked up the notion of reduced-fat, lower calorie menus for — well, for as long as most readers can remember.
